I studied piano for many years and played in several gigs and jam sessions in Italy and Israel.

Charles Valentin Alkan is a great French composer and piano virtuoso from the romantic period who is enjoying a recent revival, thanks to the interest of Canadian pianist Marc André Hamelin among others. He was Chopin's neighbour in Paris, but his public relations office wasn't as good as Chopin's. :-)

Nikolaj Kapustin is a contemporary Ukrainian composer who has realised a very original blend of Jazz and Russian post-romantic music. In this delightful prelude you can hear influences of Chopin, Bill Evans and Rachmaninov, as well as the annoying sound of my squeaky pedal. :-) Kapustin's son is UC Berkeley mathematical physicist Anton Kapustin of Langlands Program fame.

Brazil has one of the richest musical traditions in the world and one of the perks about living in Sao Paulo is being able to catch shows by famous Brazilian artists for very cheap at government subsided SESC. My love for Brazilian music was sparked at age 13 by a Joao Gilberto record my cousin lent me. It contained many tunes by Bossa Nova father Antonio Carlos Jobim, but not this one, a rare gem championed by Maysa Matarazzo and Angela Rô Rô among others.

I enjoy free form improvisation as much as I like improvising over fixed chord changes. I recorded this in the Summer of 2009 in my Auburn apartment on a Sunday morning. The recording quality is even worse than the videos above.
